philosophy for starters? ive been trying to get into nietzche, but its a bit heavy for me.

Start with the greeks unironically

>> No.13875313

epictetus - handbook
marcus aurelius - meditations
seneca - letters (may be too long for a novice reader, google a list of essential letters or just skim through it)

and then never read a philosophy book ever again

>> No.13875781

plato is a good start as a lot of his dialogues are very short, written in an interesting manner, and introduce common philosophical problems well. get a pdf of his complete works and jump around different dialogues - the usual starter kit is euthyphro, apology, crito, phaedo

after that you can go to aristotle but aristotle is much much much harder than plato and is written in a much more dry style! you will struggle!

the stoics that anon mention above are a good easy read too

from early modern philosophy, descartes meditations is a short easy read as is humes enquiry concerning human understanding.

what nietzsche work are you trying to read? you might be reading one of his more obtuse and difficult works, some of them definitely can be read with little previous philosophical knowledge

>>13875781
You should also read Kant(and fichte for kant)

>> No.13876006

If Nietzsche is hard for you just give up now

>> No.13876012

Even Fichte scholars have difficulty reading Fichte, easily the worst and most turgird writer out of all the idealists. Not a great recommendation for a beginner.

>> No.13876014

embrace your plebness and buy a beginner's overview book

Starting with Nietzsche is like starting to watch a TV show by jumping straight into season 4 or 5

>> No.13876543

>>13876012
nah schelling is definitely the most turgid out of the big idealists. i think fichte is easier to read than either schelling or hegel really.

in any case OP shouldn't read kant or any of the german idealists until he's read plato + aristotle as well as the main rationalists and empiricists

Listen to him OP. This board will tell you to start with the Greeks, and as foundational as they are, you'llget burned out on them. Read an overview of western philosophy and read further on the thinkers you find interesting. And remember that secondary sources will always help you. Anyone who says to read primary sources only is a pseud.

this, philosophy is footnotes on plato
>>13875276
yeah sure if you're trying to climb a mountain you should start at the summit you fucking nigger

Anthonny Kenny's History of Philosophy, Bertrand Russel's Problems of Philosophy, and a read on the SEP (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) and IEP on the authors discussed on the previous works should be good.

Philosophy is worthless. Just find a good novel that you like and read that.

>> No.13877230

>>13875276
You can't start with neitzche since he references a lot of philosophers before him.
I guess you can go with a chronological order, greeks perhaps?

>> No.13877259

You don't need to think twice, you should start with "First Alcibiades" by Plato, after this, just follow this order:
