Genuinely leave this board if you haven't read War and Peace.

There is literally no excuse for not having read this.

I have read it but go fuck yourself because it’s only one book on the list of things you should have read and it is very far from the most essential

Leave this board if you haven't read The Man Without Qualities

I started but it's so fucking boring I quit. Holy shit, it was an absolute chore trying to get through it.
Dosty however I can read all day and never get bored. I think I quit W&P and read C&P and never looked back.

Dosty > Tolsty

I have no interest in reading books that weren't written in English. A translation can never capture the original authors words so I don't want to bother

Genuinely leave this board if you have read Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky instead of Maude.

It was okay. Everything felt rushed and they cut out a lot of stuff.

War and Peace isn't even in the top ten of Russian novels, it's definitely isn't be-all and end-all of literature.

I dunno, I really loved C&P and Notes but I'm about a hundred pages into Demons and not a single fucking thing has happened. War and Peace was also full of stuffy nobles fainting and losing card games but I don't remember being this fucking bored while reading it in Tolstoy.

There are plenty of long, boring books written in English, rest assured.

What's your top ten then?

Come to think of it, I think it's because in War and Peace the nobility drama was constantly interspersed with the war, based Pierre Bezukhov finding out the secrets of life, and other plots.
Dosto's novels (at least the ones I've read) seem much more constrained to a single plotline in comparison. So far in Demons, Stepan has minced around with his rich female patron, her son Stavrogin was rude, and... That's it. No scenes so far have left a lasting impression, it's literally nothing but petty jealousies and money troubles between characters I don't give a shit about yet.
