I haven't read Gaddis, Burroughs or Pynchon, and everyone says that pic related has a lot of parts in similar styles to them. Can anyone give any examples? I get the feeling that the chapter from James Incandenza's father's perspective that's just him talking for the whole chapter is like Gaddis (JR specifically), and Gately's dreams seem like Pynchon from the idea I have of him. My first thought for a section like Burroughs is the bit with the Chinese guy selling Poor Tony and C contaminated Heroin but that seems too obvious.

The talky-talky chapters are Gaddis, the junkie anthropology chapters are Burroughs, and the international intrigue hijinks are Pynchon.

This thread is hella niche. I've read Infinite Jest and the only burroughs I know is because I love Running With Scissors, but I have never *read* the book, I just love the movie.

I can only make surface level comparisons to Burroughs commentary on substance abuse and mental health. The prose of DFW is directly related to Pynchon in that he has himself claimed its his biggest inspiration.

I know absolutely zero about Gaddis

This guy gets it.

...but I'll do my best.
I haven't read any Gaddis, I've only read naked lunch, gravity's reignbeaux, 49, and v.

I think as a period piece author pynchon is similar to wallace somewhat in using whatever is contemporary common place stuff, but overall wallace is a far superior writer. Pynchon really lacks his own personal levity, he's just so up his own ass with self importance.

I really only saw attempted shock value from buroughs, reminded me of a 60s-70s porno mag columnist, not anywhere approaching dfw's level.

Gately has some of the most realistic (and identifiable) moments in that book, pynchon seems to lack any reality, so nah, i disagree

OP here, also obviously the Quebec shit and all the conspiracies are Pynchony
