It consists of Socrates shooting down weak arguments and offering counter-arguments which he bases on absurd logic.
Take for example the Just City in comparison to the wealthy city, arguing that the wealthy city will have fat and lazy guards by virtue of their great wealth. He doesn't account for the ability of the wealthy to purchase mercenaries or that a city's wealth does not have to reflect the wealth of each citizen and doesn't take income disparity into account.
Yet his students just accept the argument.

You didn't, it seems.
What's YOUR opinion? Personally, I think that Justice should've been separated from Virtue, and Virtue separate to Good.
Justice is the adherence to the residing states laws.
Virtue is the adherence to the perceived actions which cause benefit to others and the self.
Good is the actual benifit, instead of the perception and interpretation of what is virtuous. Good will remain outside our perception as long as we are limited by our perception.

you know this wasn't a real historical conversation right? and that it's a fictional story to present ideas and that no idea presented within it is inherently correct? that the whole purpose of these dialogues is to spark further discussion and thought?

Not a bad choice actually. Before archaeological discovery much of what we knew about the fertile crescent history, mythology and literature was limited to very biased and incomplete sources.

In contrast the Greeks were very well studied by the Romans and so on into Western Culture. Starting with the Greeks might be more beneficial because it leads one down a very comprehensive understanding of Western lit and Western culture. Whereas Bronze Age lit and after a study of the Greeks will bring one into a broader understanding of the role of Greek/Roman culture to the ANE ideals that are wrought in the Bible and how they played on each other and both together shaped the Western World (or the entire world for that matter) so honestly I would say that starting with Bronze Age ANE or the Greeks is a great jumping point into the most classically studied literary works of the world but you can go ahead and be a total contrarian if you'd like

Socrates talked about the meaning of justice, but I forget his conclusion. He compared the society to the inside of one's mind. Also, systems of government cycle. Philosopher-kings are the best kind of monarch. The caste system works. Allegory of the cave. Etc.

Its the only legit way to govern a city. Read "Revolt against the modern world" After you read this, you fully understand the logic of the republic.

You heard of honest Socrates
The man who never lied
They weren't so grateful as you'd think
Instead the rulers fixed to have him tried
And handed him the poisoned drink
How honest was the people's noble son
The world, however, did not wait
But soon observed what followed on
It's honesty that brought him to that state
How fortunate the man with none
