Wabi sabi is genuinely admirable as a philosophy.

Did you just read In Praise of Shadows?

I was going to, but I ended up reading a more formal examination of it through Andrew Juniper's Wabi Sabi: the Japanese Art of Impermanence. I will read Shadows sometime, but for now I wanted more on the history and "universal" aspects of the philosophy as opposed to Tanizaki's more localised insights, if that makes sense.

The interesting thing is I think I've always loved the idea of wabi sabi and connected with it. Strange though it sounds, I sometimes take photos of animal carcasses and the like. Always preferred the rustic, quiet and asymmetrical. I like how wabi sabi covers not only art and and design but expands out into an environmental philosophy as well.

A lot of that is just “Apollonian”
But “material/non-material” what the fuck cop out?
Light and cool versus dark and warm?
Symmetrical versus ... not asymmetrical?

Aside from this list, I’m interested. What book should I DL to introduce the topic?

Most of it is just regular horseradish with some green colouring.

I feel sorry for people who spend their lives worrying about ageing and buy loads of superfluous products to satiate their unending desire for material wealth. Sad.

It's a really short comfy book, you can dip in and out of the chapters. It goes beyond wabi sabi into other aesthetic concepts, but they all infuse more meaning and joy into everyday things (well, I guess jade isn't every day so much these days)

It pairs well with sushi too.

Will certainly get on it although I have to say I wanted to read it on my Kindle and it's not available from Amazon. Only options left are PDF or shitty typo-ridden EPUBs. I dislike reading on my laptop so can't go for the PDF unless I want to put up with typos from EPUB converted to MOBI. Oh well.

The one I found is Wabi Sabi by Andrew Juniper. Looks promising enough.

It's usually less than five quid in print because it's tiny.
