How should a person start reading Spinoza? Are there external books that could help to understand his philosophy?

If you're referring to the Ethics (a reasonable assumption) it would be worthwhile to spend a bit of time with Euclid. Also Deleuze wrote a short intro book which is supposed to be good (I should get that one next time I see it).

I don't personally buy his substance argument at all, so I'll let someone else field that aspect of things. But there is a clear duality which is built throughout the work, and which is treated in multiple pairs of contrasted entities. I think the Deleuze book categorizes these.
