The suitors were not innocent. That said... I tend to not believe that the Iliad and the Odyssey were products of the same author(s) largely because the Iliad has a very tragic and objective view of violence (it does not pick sides between Greeks and Trojans and all characters are humanized)... whereas the Odyssey presents the suitors as cartoon characters. It's hard to imagine the author(s) of the Iliad creating something so relatively shallow.

That's the thing though, the contrast, between the great war and petty internal conflicts, the immediate and the lasting consequences of war, Priam vs. old Laertes, Patroclus' funeral rites vs. Odysseus' bathing etc. Keep in mind that there were many other epics that got lost, who knows how their styles were.
