1. An umbrella term for various pre-christian mystery cults/ platonism which fused Christianity with elements of oriental dualism. Very interesting to study, provocative to determine in what way some gnostic strands remained within Christianity. (mysticism mostly)

2. An umbrella term used by modern (post 19th century) LARPers to designate the ULTIMATE ESOTERICISM and UNIVERSAL TEACHING; in actuality being masked Luciferianism. I agree that "gnosis" as a concept is central to most mystical practices, but the equating of gnosis and authority and the renouncement of free-will is an affront to both God and humankind.

Gnosticism is an expression of the extreme doubt humans can harbor against "words" and "Names" (divine names). It's a gnoseological attitude which abruptly anti-human in nature: demonic influence has it's highest objective not in making man evil, but in the attempt to void mankind of it's humanity - which is the capacity of choosing right from wrong.
