His book is shit. He's a psychologist writing about history and economics. He's not very well read in either subject. The first three chapters are how bad it is to be a poor peasant dying of cholera. This is ofcourse true, but even here he makes elementary misstakes. For some reason he tries to make the argument that peasants only ate roots, tubers and starches. Reading any historical book, even fiction, reveals that there was no shortage of seasonal fruits and vegetables. On top of this a myriad of conservation methods were applied. Just retarded.

The rest of the book is setting up ridiculous straw mans and playing with statistics. He spends an entire chapter on accident rates going down, without explaining why this is a consequence of humanistic liberalism. On the chapter of suicide rates he accidentally finds a huge increase in suicide by poisoning. Then he says its ok because its from drug usage, WHILE FREE DRUG USAGE IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF INDIVIDUALISM. The book is so, so, so fucking bad. You should laugh at anybody who thinks its good, and I despair for it is a best seller.

He tries refuting away communism, socialism, reactionary thought, monarchism and theology in one book without reading a single original work. Literally read anything else. I would suggest "The rise and the decline of the state". The book convinced me that to be a top public intellectual the only thing you need to do is get decent credentials in ANY field and then suck the dick of power. Fuck this guy.

I enjoyed how the mind works. It is a really good starting point for getting into psychology. It’s really informative without being boring. His explanation of the psychological reasons for things like humor was fabulous.

There’s parts that I found unnecessary and skippable, especially in the beginning. For instance he spends more time than necessary debunking creationists. I guess ithats because the book is 20 years old.

Treat him like Jordan Peterson, good at talking about psychology and ignore anything else he has to say.
