You really needed secondary literature when it comes to ethics;
Steven Nadler is very good one so start with that.

Descartes would be a good idea, and you need nothing for him.

You don't really need anything to read Spinoza because he formats his writing in a very mathematical way to lay out his proofs. It helps to be familiar with the specific beliefs of theists of the period that he is in part rebuking all throughout his work, but its not necessary. As another anon said Descartes is his sort of opponent in a way so reading him would also be a good idea. In any case Spinoza's formulation can be understood by itself fairly well, which is indicated by how many later thinkers used him for their own devices.

Roger Scruton and Deleuze both wrote pretty good secondary material, and there's an epub file floating around with a thirty-ish page glossary of terms I found really helpful.

whats the name of the glossary of terms?
link if possible

Descartes is necessary, malebranche is optional

Whats the reading order for Descartes?

>> No.13343778

Ethics chapters order:
>3-4-5
>then 1 and 2

>> No.13343783

>>13343778
it is easier to understand the ethics following this order, if you don't want to read anything more about spinoza.

It's in the Translator's Preface to the Hackett Publishing edition of Ethics, Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect, and Selected Letters [all one volume].

The file is floating around somewhere, but unfortunately I couldn't find it on b-ok. Some concerted googling should work for you.
