Italian countryside, Iceland, Mongolia and Kamchatka (Russia) are good if you wan to chill out and get inspiration. Big cities are now full of everything and not good environments for writing. Maybe places like Edinburgh or some remote British villages i.e. the countryside could inspire you as well, depends on what you want to write really, certainly you won't write the next Crime and Punishment there because a particular lifestyle is needed and similar conditions as well, not sure if it's worth it, writing comfy non PC novels is good enough IMO.

Cambridge is wonderful. It is very low key and just feels like a busy town- the atmosphere provided by its universities keeps it feeling alive without ever becoming as overwhelming or busy as London. It has the heritage of a great city, only without the crushing magnitude and soulless modern adaptation that has destroyed so many other “culture capitals” in the 21st Century.

Depends what you want. I live in London, it’s extremely busy at all times, but public transport is great and relatively cheap, so it’s easy to get anywhere fast. And fairly easy to get to more ‘natural’ places too like massive wooded parks. Or just go people watching. It’s a place with many nooks and crannies because it has such a ling history and if you have the time and money you can get a lot of different experiences in one place, hipster shit in the north/east, more bookstores than you have time to see, cabarets, sex clubs, chinese tripe on a stick, hidden cafes, squats housing homeless people, raves, million dollar apartments, etc.

I fortunately have a chance to see a lot of place because I work in filmmaking, but I can imagine a /lit/ lifestyle being fairly easy to find here, as there’s something for everyone, with the important caveat: if you can afford it.

5. Edinburgh
6. Ghent
7. Paris - I personally hate Paris, the people are awful, there's too many tourists, and it just isn't that nice. However, you will always be within 100m of a café you sit outside of and read, and there will always be something happening in the city to serve as inspiration.
8. NYC - same as paris but the rivers/waterways aren't as comfy.
Places that are not /lit/:
Dublin: Like a mediocre english town with more pubs and stag/hen parties everywhere.
Milan & Florence.
All the american cities. (This is more to do with their size than their culture. I imagine a small university city could be nice, but most of the major cities feel vacuous)

Some areas are to be avoided (and even then it's chickenshit compared to the bad areas of any non-Western European country) but overall it's not such a big deal.
