reading brief interviews with hideous men now and it's my first wallace book, i feel kinda mixed about it, some of the shorts are great and some i find very meh. The one about the dad wiggling his dick was really good as was the depressed person but i think I might've fucked up by starting with this one

I had the same experience. His really good stories - like "Forever Overhead" - are some of the best of the era, but most of that book is stories that didn't come off well or that he literally stopped writing halfway through and then gives an apology for why he stopped writing them. Some of the "Interviews" are amazingly well done, a great insight into the male sexual psyche, but most are half-baked.

I have this fantasy that after we die we find out there is an afterlife and David Foster Wallace is there and he has his pants and underwear wrapped around his ankles and every human who has ever walked the earth is together holding hands and rejoicing, but moreso laughing together at David Foster Wallace's Cock because it is so small that it is shaped like a serpinski gasket that just fractals into itself and at the same time contains all of our lives and every possible configuration of the universe and he's like real embarrassed about it and trying to cover up but you have William Gaddis and Faulkner or someone holding his arms back and we are all, together and in unison, laughing at his tiny infinitely small beyond the zero serpinski dick and at how all of the hardships and triumphs of life we took so seriously and endured were all just a part of his regressive ad infinitum weeny, and it is just So Small It Is Beyond Small and all races and sexes and even the animals are there yowling and chirping or hooting in laughter finally as one, unified: forever laughing together in infinite jest.

I heavily related to the very early part about the guy's addiction to marijuana, even though i'm more of a hard drug addict. I wonder if that was from David's personal experience with smoking pot.

I will never not laugh at the greatly deserved ridicule of this hack fraud. DFW will be remembered by posterity as the most incompetent snake oil salesman western literature has ever produced.

The only sincere act of his life was when he kicked away the chair. His life was nothing but a series of ironies and lies predicated on the the joke that is new sincerity. The big punchline was the creaking of the rafter and the piss trickling down his leg to the floor.

his epiphany that the only viable thing for him to do was to kill himself was the best thing to happen to literature in 30 years since he began writing because behind all the self aware gimmicks and self help books and the drugs and the audience pussy there was no discernible talent
