No he would be appalled by lit and the internet in general. Not that Schopenhauer could even exist now at all.

Do people here really like the Upanishads? I know we have a few fans, but I don't see them discussed often.

give us a break, man; moms use their love as a coercive weapon

not the guy you replied to

because materialism (in the philosophical sense) is basically everywhere and impossible to get away from. Transcendental Idealism is considered a relic.

In all likelihood he would spend his time on YouTube, listening to music and watching plays and opera. He also kept reading the London Times all his life. It would make sense he would be online a lot. Where do you get the idea that Schopenhauer would hate the internet?

Justifiably so. His mom didn't like him either. She thought he was depressing to be around and didn't allow him to join the tea parties she hosted with Goethe and other notables. His dad also killed himself and Johanna (his mom) pretended to mourn his death but was leaving for the fabulous social life at Weimar (and good amount of dicking, I would assume) almost immediately after, leaving Schopenhauer behind.

Schoppi wouldn't exist today as he did back then.
He would have been molded by modern day as much as us.
I am certain a large amount of great people get absolutely lost [while others benefit and rise (muh wrong generation xD)] solely because they have cute femboys wearing cat ears videos on the internet.

nobody posted the letter yet really, /lit/?

Letter from Johanna Schopenhauer to her son Arthur Schopenhauer, dated 6 November 1807.

‘You are not an evil human; you are not without intellect and education; you have everything that could make you a credit to human society. Moreover, I am acquainted with your heart and know that few are better, but you are nevertheless irritating and unbearable, and I consider it most difficult to live with you.
All of your good qualities become obscured by your super-cleverness and are made useless to the world merely because of your rage at wanting to know everything better than others; of wanting to improve and master what you cannot command. With this you embitter the people around you, since no one wants to be improved or enlightened in such a forceful way, least of all by such an insignificant individual as you still are; no one can tolerate being reproved by you, who also still show so many weaknesses yourself, least of all in your adverse manner, which in oracular tones, proclaims this is so and so, without ever supposing an objection.
If you were less like you, you would only be ridiculous, but thus as you are, you are highly annoying’.

>we forfeit three quarters of our freedoms to be like other people
More like four quarters these days. If Schopenauer took one look at modern social media he would probably just ask to be killed on the spot, because if we've let things get to this point, there's no hope for things eventually getting better.

Quite the opposite, in fact, a mother's love for child is likely the only genuine love a woman feels. More often than not, the love a woman has for her partner is more accuratey the love she has for the potential of her relationship with her partner. He is not a person, but a necessary key to the things she really wants: A wedding/marriage, a home, and children. These are the markers of social value that a woman's life goals revolve around. Notice how they never fawn over a particular man, but more often, "a husband". It's not who he is, but what he can do for her. She does not love the person, just the role he performs.

Her child can be a completely irredeemable piece of shit with no positive future, however, and she will still love that child. This is the only unconditional love a woman can ever give, despite all the unconditional love she expects in return. Everyone else is dispensible, replaceable, simply a side-character in her life that she can use to achieve success (see: the three markers of social value above). This includes friends, partners, even family.

Literally this.

>People were so thoughtful and creative back then, why does nobody make X anymore, or talk about Y, or read Z?
Well what the fuck else did they have to do? In the early 1800s, if you had some free time, your options were basically:
>Reading
>Writing
>Painting
>Sculpting
>Gardening
>Needlepoint
>Playing/writing music
>Riding your horse
>Watching a play
>Walking around the shops, gossiping like a lady (note: this was seen as really low-brow and base behavior back then)
People read hundreds of books on philosophy, nature, religion, and science in their lifetimes back then, because that was the #1 source of entertainment media. Luckily, their main form of entertainment had been popular ever since it was possible to create it, so there were centuries of thoughts and stories for them to read, understand, ponder, discuss, and then elaborate or explore in their own philosophies and writing.
As mentioned, if they even had so much as movies or video games back then, it would all be over. Instead of writing a book on his interpretations of psychology and existentialism, he would be writing a blog post on his interpretations of modern video games and commercialism. (also he would probably be an incel, as would most of history's "greatest thinkers" if they were alive today)
