I think I know what you are getting at, but if you really need God to base your values and morality upon, you are basically a slave obeying. I know Atheism may lead to Nihilism, but you can overcome it. The best Christian is the one who overcomes nihilism not by taking a leap of faith and just believing in God, but rather by realising that his values are subjective and not inherent, even if he chooses one of those values to be God.
