I don’t see how really, given that Musil’s major works postdate Mann’s... Mann was more interested in popularity than Musil too, I always feel like Mann’s own ambition was cut out for him from the beginning: to be popular with both intellectual critics and the general reading public.

There’s some amusing anecdotes about Musil’s dislike for Mann. He ended up having to rely on his financial help at some point though. Kek.
