is tao lin's shift from hipster fool to psychadellic wiseman the greatest transition in the history of the written word?

i understand your fear. i also felt that fear. the truth is that she won't realize you've bought it. idk as long as you don't retweet him nobody is going to realize that you agree with him. that's why you read books - it's not some broad social contract you can just listen to them without having to announce it socially.

They may be a waste of time and they're not the answer but they sure as fuck aren't a hazard to the mind unless you have a history of mental illness, or you aren't actually ingesting what you think you are.

LSD, for example isn't addictive. Simply because you can't binge it without upping your dose a fuckload each time, which is very impractical and a waste. You have to wait for your tolerance to to back down before doing it again.
I've had a really bad LSD trip once, I still cringe mildly at it but it doesn't affect me in any way now.

And I'm not saying you can't to insane from overdoing them, because you definitely can. I'm saying they're not a hazard if you aren't a retard around them.

> The danger is so particular because every time someone tries it and has babby's first metacognition and correlates that to literally saving the world

That's stupid. Anyone who's done psychedelics knows that you get these thoughts and ideas that seem so profound, but once you're sober you realise they're usually not that "deep" and are just dumb.

the CIA went absolutely off the rails with LSD when they first got their hands on it-
dosing fellow agents and watching them run into the streets naked and deranged, dosing hooker's customers secretly, even dosing street people and poor blacks into unironic insanity and then leaving them on the streets
in fact the only GOOD thing they managed to achieve with LSD was getting it into hippie circles through military brats like Jim Morrison, or the students of Bob Hyde at Harvard and completely derail the anti-war movement.
after that they and the upper echelons of government in this country were scared that random rucks would start using CIA methods and dosing politicans and agents in public and had it classified as an illegal substance

That proposed reason for making them illegal makes zero sense. LSD is plenty available and that wouldn't do anything against fears of weaponizing it.

Making it illegal did on the other hand allow for criminality to be associated with a movement and ideology that worked in opposition against state interests. It dissuaded people from experiencing what it had to offer.

So if it was made illegal for the purpose of preventing weaponizing the substance, then possession on a single tab of acid is illegal because... why exactly? Why not just production or possession over a quantity of >10 grams?

It has nothing to do with protecting the people's interests. It does protect government interests, but not because it's a literal direct threat that can "poison" operatives. An addiction is a dependence, the fact that you say "month or two" shows that it's not a dependence, because you miss it every couple months a dependence is wanting to do it every hour of every day and thinking about it all the time to the point where you can't focus on anything else except getting your score.

Trip is a nice gentle read that is quietly thought provoking. I don't think it's going to blow anybody's minds or completely change the way they view the world, but it poses some nice reflections without being too forceful or anything like that. It made me think, but in a nice way - if that makes sense, idk.

Also I think formalistically it is interesting, I like the combination of non-fiction with memoir. It's like you learn all the facts in the first half then see how they apply to Tao's day to day life. So I thought that was neat. Also I liked the quiet humour in it. I don't think people give Tao enough credit re: self-awareness. I liked the little detail about the indigenous south americans who claim to have some millenia old recipe then its revealed that whatever plant they're using was introduced by the spanish or something. can't remember exactly what it was something like that. i like it because it kinda calls into question a lot of the 'ancient wisdom' he refers to in the first half but he decides to include it anyway.
