Do I really have to read all of these before Ulysses?

You def have to read the rest of Joyce up to that point as well as the odyssey but the others aren’t totally necessary. They just enhance the reading.

No, you only need Don Gifford’s annotations. Actually, you don’t even have to read anything before tackling Finnegans Wake, the annotations from fweet.org would suffice. Hugh Kenner read FW before reading Ulysses, so don’t listen to people who say that you should read Joyce’s previous works in order to prepare for his later, more experimental style.

Also, Ulysses is mainly difficult because of the fragmented way it presents the inner thoughts of characters, not because of obscure literary allusions. Ulysses is actually not as referential as most people think.
