>It is not the man who denies the gods worshiped by the multitude, who is impious, but he who affirms of the gods what the multitude believes about them
-Epicurus

>The gods are immortal and blessed and men who ascribe any additional qualities that are alien to immortality and blessedness are impious.
-Epicurus

Why atheists and other Euphoric fedora tippers like to quote Epicurus as some poster boy for atheism, while being totally ignorant of quotes like these?

>> No.13130409

In the quote from the common atheist meme you're referencing, it's translated God. In your quote he says gods. Obviously he is not talking about the same thing.

you don't seem to understand the meaning of atheism

>> No.13130419

What is he talking about then? Fairies?

It is clear that Epicurus was not atheist, but most probably a polytheist who maintained that the Gods do not interfere in the affairs of men because they are immortal principles

I see no contradiction in completely denying YHWH while simultaneously affirming the gods, because they make different claims. They aren't the same thing. You're autistic maybe.
>>13130419
What do you mean, what is he talking about? It says right there. The gods. You even repeat it in your next paragraph.

So Atheists who quote Epicurus on a regular basis only reject Yahweh, but the Greek polytheistic model is something they agree with?

Atheists don't believe in God or gods, Epicurus believed in gods. Do you see the contradiction now?

Christian (Jewish) autism. God makes different claims than the gods.

What are you talking about? Epicurus was Greek, anon. I don't know what to tell you, I just hope you feel as stupid as you seem.

So why does Reddit /atheism/, for example, quote Epicurus almost on a daily basis?
https://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/1tchqy/epicurus/

Some people even call him "The World's First Atheist"

How can polytheist who believes in Gods or godhood, be an atheist?

>>13130522
What? I'm not christian. You're too retarded to see the contradiction: Touting a flaming theist as the posterboy for atheism. That does not mean christianity is true, that is not an argument for any religion, it's just to say atheists using Epicurus are retards.

I don't think you know what's going on anon.

How can it even matter?

I do not know how deep you have been into atheism, but the total negation of all Gods/Godhood produces a certain feel of Euphoria and Euphoric feeling

The very moment you reject all these childish fairytales of goblins, ghosts and all sorts of vengeful deities and say to yourself: "There is no God but Man and Science" produces a something similar to as if one would snort heroin or coke for the first time

What do I read to understand Nietzsche, I have read a good amount of literature but nothing philosophical really. I keep see you recommending the portable neitzsche but I don't know where to start

The Portable is the guide. It's more or less chronological with only a few parts ;eft out that Kaufmann felt derivative. He prepares one well enough I think. You might stop and ponder over a bit of it for a while. Maybe take notes. Feel free to disagree with him on a notion or two. I found it to be a lot of fun really.

You fucking idiots really believe that meme atheist quote attributed to Epicurus was really his? Have you even read what survives of his works? He never said such a thing, nor did his philosophy advocated such an idea. Moreover, the quote itself proves that it is a much later creation. The neatness of its syntax and the anxieties and ideas it conveys clearly come from a Christian (not even Jewish) context, not from a Greek one. Whoever made up that quotation clearly attributed it to Epicurus to instill in it the authority of a Greek thinker. Do some research and put to use your common sense before arriving to premature conclusions.

I have had a lot of problems getting into philosophy despite spending much of my adolescence philosophizing. As a child I was interested in religious affairs, but this did become nihilism in my teenage years. The main thing I meant have problems with is how contrived the arguments are. Correct me if Im wrong, but it feels like many philosophers invent arguments to match their predetermined conclusion--this cannot be considered exact logic.
