I was going to say, it's amazing how accurately de Tocqueville nailed America's core character, and that was more than 150 years ago. It IS still a highly accurate description of what most Americans are like.

Lasch is sort of like the American Adorno. His critiques of the left that emerged from the 60s/70s hold up very well today.

“Cultural radicalism has become so fashionable, and so pernicious in the support it unwittingly provides for the status quo, that any criticism of contemporary society that hopes to get beneath the surface has to criticise, at the same time, much of what currently goes under the name of radicalism”

"“The atmosphere in which the Weathermen lived - an atmosphere of violence, danger, drugs, sexual promiscuity, moral and psychic chaos - derived not so much from an older revolutionary tradition as from the turmoil and narcissistic anguish of contemporary America”

If this sort of angle appeals to you, I'd recommend it.

Imagine being so fat that, upon your enormous weight tipping over your mobility scooter, you're reduced to flailing around on a wall of 12-packs of soda. Everything about that is immensely sad. I don't understand how someone continue to make poor decisions past the point of their weight going past a manageable amount. Perhaps that's something about being an American that I'm missing despite being one

Not really, it applies mostly to 90s pop culture and would feel very dated if he did not take things to such extremes to allow for a wide range of interpretation.

I agree that Steinbeck nails the real shit beneath all the excess and spectacle (at least where I live, pretty close to his stomping grounds). Seems like less and less of it is going around all the time, though, and it's really only alive outside the big cities.

I'd say he covers a certain subset of American culture. He was best of all Boomers, the guy that rode the tiger that was the middle of the 20th century better than anyone else, wrote down what he discovered, and pulled the plug before the Bush era could really set in. But outside of the 60's and its aftershocks, I'm not sure how representative he is.
