it's been held to be this terrible dystopian future where everyone's anesthetised, tame and dominated by consumer culture and hedonism (you know, the counterpart to 1984) when in reality the author unwittingly described a perfect world where everyone is actually, honestly content with their lot, there's no suffering or disease and the drug of choice is 100% side-effect free and better than anything we could possibly make in a lab these days. The only reason it's played as something terrible in the book is because of one FAS baby and one christian troglodyte don't like it. It's Huxley being a grumpy old man complaining about kids these days and being intimidated by technology and progress. It's a fucking "back in my day" disguised as a dystopian sci-fi epic. I would KILL, I would MURDER my entire family and yours for a chance to die and be born again in such a world, even if it meant being an Epsilon Minus.

It's still a great book, though, won't deny credit where it's due.

I would have suggested you read Monday Or Tuesday but that's a better choice come to think of it. Her shortest novel, also. If you like it you should definitely jump straight to To The Lighthouse, which, even though the "action" is more sparse, has tremendous emotional depth. I can see someone not being moved much by The Waves, but if Dalloway does anything at all to you then I trust To The Lighthouse will be what you expected The Waves to be. If not then lose all hope.

Some might be tempted to laugh or ridicule you but I actually understand this
When I first read Mein Kampf I went in prepared to read the work of an insane murderer, and I was taken by surprise. It affected me pretty badly, that book convinced me that almost everything I had been told about him was a lie. It took me a long time to deconstruct Hitler back down to reality, for a while there I felt so cheated that I really idolized him, more because he was so lied about rather than the actual ideas he held.
But thankfully as I read more about him and his organisation I realised that a lot of it was true and he wasnt this savior-like figure I had conjured up in my head.
I still admire his tenacity and conviction for his cause though. Not just anybody goes from being a homeless orphan to dictator of a country. And not just anybody has the balls to stand against the police with his comrades and take a bullet for his beliefs.
Overall though I find Codreanu and Mosley to be more admirable fascists.

Hitler wasn't perfect, but nobody can question that he loved his people and wanted what was best for them, and his inspiration is enough to move anybody who hears it openly. I know what you mean by dialing it back from idolization, because he did make mistakes and had some terrible things done in his name. But they were facing a global threat of marxism, which ultimately won, and hence is still a problem.

I didn't say he did. I explicitly said the Iliad ends with Hector's funeral (fine, I said "death" to be precise).
>The Iliad mentions some things that happened in the past but its actually set in the final year of the war.
The detailed action itself relates those few final weeks, but the Iliad covers the beginning of the war, doesn't just casually mention "oh yeah and there was a war against Troy going on". They embark towards Troy AFTER the beef between Achilles and Agamemnon is already stated.
