Why do people ask you what you're reading if they're just going to be offended by the answer?

>in the middle of reading a book
>person asks me what I'm reading
>if I ignore them, it's insulting
>if I just tell them the title, 99/100 times they haven't heard of the book
>if I try to give an answer with any amount of detail on it they get bored or annoyed

Why can't normies just let me read in peace?

You take the blue pill. The story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe that NPCs are people that love and care about you. You take the red pill. You stay in wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbithole goes.

only one person ever asked me what i was reading. it was an old man walking his dog and i was reading to the lighthouse by virginia woolf. he seemed really pleased about that and said it was great to see a young person reading woolf. i asked him if he had any recommendations for me and he suggested i read a supposedly fun thing i'll never do again by david foster wallace. the end.

Because people are omniscient and know you are reading something that will offend their sensibilities, they ask so their reason for offense will not be ambiguous.
