Get a leatherbound KJV, red-letter edition, something that's a pleasure to hold and read instead of a stiff paperback you'll never crack. An everyday Bible should be something you can carry around.

It's not about looking /lit/ it's about functionality. Leatherbounds are designed to be held open for long periods of time. They're designed to be held in the hand. Also, as if OWC actually made a study bible worth a damn. Get a good KJV concordance or study bible. If you're going Bible, might as well go all out -- ESV, Revised Study Bible is my go-to for serious study. That for comprehension and KJV for style will be enough

Not really, no. NRSV is a good choice, but the KJV is important for its sheer influence on the popular imagination, on the English language, and on literally any piece of English literature that came after it. It's the skeleton key for the canon. Hardbacks are fine.

It's worth getting the Penguin Student Edition from an online foreign seller anon. Norton Criticals go up for sale used all the time on Amazon. (Honestly if you buy new books you're a chump.) Just do a little research with your Bibles before you buy. There's some good red-letter KJVs with the apocrypha.

1961 corrected version of the 1934 text is the standard edition. Gabler version is standard for Dubliners and Portrait, the Arthur 1960s text of either of those is fine also. do NOT buy the 1939 Finnegans Wake or the 1922 or 1981 Ulysses, all of these either have major errors or are textually questionable. The corrected 2012 oxford version of the Wake is standard as well. Editions do matter as Joyce himself corrected thousands of errors in all of his books due to slipshod printing from the "original" texts, do not buy any "original"' joyce text as it's guaranteed uncorrected and shit.

as for editions, get the vintage editions of dubliners, portrait and ulysses. get no edition but the oxford edition of finnegans wake. the penguin text of poems and exiles is fine, the oxford text of collected letters is fine. if you are reading Ulysses you need annotations or you WILL give up. get thornton's annotations or gifford's but giffords are much much longer. bloomsday book is not necessary but can be helpful. hugh kenner's intro to ulysses is a good start in the critical literature. penguins modern classics has annotated editions of dubliners and portrait, these may or may not be necessary for you. gifford also has a book of annotations for dubliners and portrait but it's overkill. if you are attempting the wake you MUST read skeleton key and joyce's book of the dark first. TIndall also has a good introduction. without supplementary literature you WILL NOT make it thru the wake and you will think joyce is stupid or le trickster. vico, dante, homer, hamlet are prerequisite for decent understanding of wake and ulysses. familiarity with the bible/Catholicism helps dramatically too. anyone with suggestions on how to read ulysses or wake best is free to chime in, this is simply how I tackled his work. I can also talk a little bit about the best way to read pound's cantos if people are interested.
