Think about it, in Hegel thought history is constructed through the dialectic. Thesis, Antithesis, and finally Synthesis. This is the path of progress that inevitably happens. Thus to properly understand History or Philosophy. You must first start at the very beginning, and fully commit yourself to understanding those thoughts from the perspective of that period before moving on to the next stage. Then repeating until you finally work your way up the present. Thus creating a linear path you must follow to sufficiently understand things

What are JRPGs but a medium where you are forced to follow a linear path by fighting small time bosses, then medium bosses, then hard ones, until you finally get to the big bad himself at the very end (GOD!). And you can't skip any steps along the way
