I came across Imperium a few weeks ago without knowing anything about the author or having any interest in history, cyclical or linear, or an interest in national socialist ideas. I was just curious.

My curiosity was sparked by a phenomenon Nietzsche spoke of: the free spirit versus the production-line citizen. Free spirits refuse to get strapped onto the common harness for the spiritual improvement and enlightenment of the common man. The academy is forever closed to free spirits. Hundreds of free spirits have gone to the grave without an atom of recognition, which is sad, if not heart breaking.

For all his faults, Francis Yockey is one such free spirit. Yockey wrote this 500 page book in 6 months, all from the top of his head! It is very hard to do justice to the book without damaging the message. Suffice it to say that this Yockey character was very very clever and he is worth a read.

You don't have to subscribe to his metaphysics, I certainly don't, but neither do you have to be frightened of getting astonished by a man who was probably as smart as Friedrich Nietzsche, if not smarter. Unless, that is, you are frightened of death by astonishment.

I have just re-read it to see if it had stood the test of time. Yockey’s bitter denunciation of both Russia and America certainly has a Cold War touch about it but in some ways it is timeless. His encyclopaedic knowledge of world history and his deconstruction of liberal democracy are still impressive.
He rejected the scientific racism of the Nazis in favour of assimilation and stressed the importance of culture but he nevertheless dismissed the Slavs as barbarians and the Jews as rootless cosmopolitans.

The area of Wicklow I live in is very different and quite far away from what texts / wikipedia say about him. Francis would never have bought a property in a high population sea-side town. It's worth a read if you are interested in Spengler's ideas and/or extreme political ideology either from a personal or research standpoint. It's not going to win any converts, however. It's not as "serious" as Decline, that's for sure. He clearly has some major grudges against systems like Darwinism, which for someone like myself who is more of the Martin Bormann understanding of NS as a system that shouldn't retreat into flights of fantasy is a point of weakness.
