How do i learn to be a good judge of literature? Like, if someone asks me why i like Blood Meridian i'll answer "uuhhh like, the prose was very good y'know and like the Judge was pretty cool and the descriptions were nice i guess". I can't form a coherent reason on why i like it. I wanna learn how to be an incisive critic, specifying exactly what techniques, and why they're good, that makes certain works of literature, good books. What books should i read?

Grow a personality and form honest opinions based on the effect works of writing have on you. Quit shitposting on a taiwanese basket weaving forum.

It comes with experience and a frame of reference

Sometimes reading theory helps clarify thoughts that were rolling around in your mind like the ball of a puzzle maze, waiting to be slotted. Reading "Sculpting in Time" gave me a much clearer understanding of why I hated that movie "Prince of Tides" so intensely.

Read books that are recommended by well-regarded programs, such as ones from academic institutions or even online sources. Those works will be able to give you enough context and foundation for understanding and comparatively analyzing things like plot, style, character development, etc. It won't come quickly. Spend time with it and be as specific as possible. Break down style into individual words and sentences if you have to. Why did the author choose one word over another? Where does the structure of this sentence lead the reader? Why is this encounter that the character has significant to the development of this character? What does it tell the reader? How does it contribute to the plot as a whole? After a while, it gets easier, and you'll do it more naturally.

Reading what? Which books?
>And doing analysis
Define analysis or how to do it. Are there any books on the subject?
>Go look how lit classes are at top tier unis
How to do that if i'm not from a top tier uni? Also, aren't unis just teaching feminism or marxism or whatever? Do they even do analysis?

Like literally any books dude, opinions come naturally the more you take in a certain medium, also plenty of universities offer lectures on books for free on YouTube, and if you aren't being ironic about that feminism/marxism comment I suggest taking a break from 4chan for a while
