No I'm just irrational. I do the same when I have a physical copy OP, but I mostly read books on my phone when I'm out and about for convenience. Though now I get glares from old people on the bus for looking at my phone even though I'm reading a book.

If someone sees you reading a book in public in my country they will immediately think you are mentally ill and they will gossip you and the whole town will know. I've never seen anyone with a book in his hands in my country.
This happens in small countries only it seems, last month I visited Berlin and every second bench had a person sitting on it and reading a book.

Hardbacks are read w/o dust jackets and a paperback only come with me if it's one I'm fine being associated with.

I'll never understand this mindset. I could be considered a social autist, someone who continually makes errors in social judgements and puts his foot in his mouth on a regular basis.

However, I used to work as a chef. Every day, I was allowed an hour's break. I would head upstairs to the bar area of the restaurant, pull out a book during the busy post-lunchtime period (it was an inner-city bar) and read whatever book I had. Either people ignored me, or inquistively asked what I was reading. Whenever I told them a little about it, they would be nice about it. Some likely feigned interest, but never in a rude manner.
I'm sure at least some probably thought I was a fucking weirdo, or perhaps even went back to their tables to laugh at me.

But who gives a fuck? Reading is a pretty commonplace fucking thing to do. People are usually interested if they see a strange title, or a book they didn't expect you to be reading. I had zero problems with this. In other words, give yourself more normie credit, OP.

Saw some danger hair low test male reading pic related on the subway here in Toronto. He was holding it up to make sure everyone could see, and he had a slight smile on his face. I observed his reading habit and he took about 5 minutes per page. I had a rather Sapphic presenting young woman see me reading American Psycho before a class.
She said, I don’t know how you could read that.
I said to her I thought it was funny in parts.
She just shook her head in disgust.
I decided not to tell her that other parts gave me boners.
