Keep reading until you understand. Don't worry about how long it takes, the more you do it the better and faster you'll get.

Read easier books to improve your reading skills, then you can move into the big pomo tomes.
The /lit/ starting kit is a good start.

Yeah, I probably made the mistake of buying a bunch of difficult pomo stuff instead of the easier books first.

I'll keep trying, thanks anon.

This. If you feel like reading difficult books, remember the recommendations from your high school teachers, they're probably better than /lit/ memes.

This is gonna sound like a fucking travesty, and it kind of is, but read the first section of the plot on Wikipedia. This takes away from the discovery element of reading but does nothing to rob the book of any prose/humor/tone etc. This way you know what events are occurring even when they are temporally obfuscated, ie a single event occurring over many pages with dialogue throughout. I don't think the plot in GR is something that can really be spoiled, at least the way it reads doesn't lead you to any sort of grand discovery or revelation.
Reading the study version of Shakespeare really helped me in high school because I was always thinking, 'this is cool and all, but what the fuck just happened?' The study page on the left stated in very clear terms what was occurring and the text on the right had fellows ejaculating at one another and such.
