I agree. Aristotle sorta works for me. Meaning is happiness which is living a life according to virtue/function/reason. My concern is that in a post-modern world, one philosophy or ethics is not true for everyone, so ethics/meaning comes down to a matter of individual preference. Looked at one way, this weakens the notion of meaning. In fact, it points out that there may be no meaning whatsoever. It’s a case of which veil of meaning are you willing to settle for.
