I must confess I've stolen books. I've told my friend about it and he tells me it's pathetic.
I pull out my Bolaño card and the fact that books, at least here, are crazy expensive.
What's your opinion, dear /lit/izen?

I work as a barista in a busy college town and sometimes when the students are in the bathroom I'll steal their labtops/textbooks out of their bags and sell them on ebay

Stealing books is not a crime in my book (lol). Just steal from big bookstores, not from small bookshops.

My local library set a ton of books aside to be discarded and let anyone take them. I didn't find out till a week later, but when I got there I ended up getting 30+ books, mostly hardcovers, in excellent condition. Most of the books I got were given to the library in the 90s, and most of the books were never checked out. In that case I think thievery would be better than letting them gather dust for decades.

Stealing books from a library is really the lowest. Stealing from a bookstore is somewhat different...which begs the question: WHY DON'T YOU JUST GET A FUCKING LIBRARY CARD, MOTHERFUCKER?

As >>12477421 says, I've just stolen from big bookstore chains, not small bookshops nor libraries. I just chose that pic after googling "stealing books".
The stolen books are books that the libraries that I'm part don't have or books that I know I will write shit on.

As long as you steal from Barnes and Noble, or similar chains, it's cool

Stealing books from libraries is a unique tourist thing. It's actually quite common for bibliophiles to steal books from famous major city libraries as a memento.

A true bibliophile would never even think of doing that out of proper moral substance and a fear of the ghost of Andrew Carnegie.
What you are describing sounds like degenerate American Millennial behaviour.

Even when I was ten I realized stealing from Barnes and Noble was A-OK. lmao at all these people spooked on crime. It's how I got my sick (coffee table)animal encyclopedia. Bad news is I was a retarded 10 year old and physically removed the barcode, thus ruining the books back cover, because I was noiding about it setting of the theft detection system. I have a few books from my highschool's library too.

I seduced the librarian of a fancy college library where I live, and asked her to help me smuggle out a few books. Imagine her surprise when I showed up with a box of about twenty somewhat rare editions.
Needless to say we made love on the stack of them, and I ended up ruining a first edition copy of Tristes Tropiques with the juices of my passion.
Currently conspiring to shit twice in the same place, as saying goes, and get both editions of the Decline of the West, as well as a very nice Italian museum piece on human anatomy, and perhaps a couple books of Niesztche's as well, I feel as though it would be doing an honour to his spirit.

a library is built, stocked and maintained by taxpayers. its existing harms writers and publishers making it so their works need only be bought once per town rather than once per reader. every library should be auctioned off and replaced with an initiative to make public domain books available online, which, by the way, already exists in several form provided by NGOs.
