It's been said that if you can't explain something to group of fifth graders, you don't truly understand it. Taking that into consideration, many, many works that /lit/ considers "essential" actually look quite foolish and superfluous. Oh, you need 620 pages to tell the reader all your sophomoric thoughts about death? That's nice. So people used to write things by hand and it looked fancy, but then with new technology and stuff people started making everything uniform and clean looking. This was new and cool at the time, so people started using the look for stuff besides advertising, like art and movies and architecture. People then started thinking about how this changed affected the people who saw it and what it did to our culture.

Unless a fifth grader is at the level to where they can reason abstractly then this saying is empirically false. There is a reason 5th graders aren’t learning Algebra 2 or doing any kind of mathematics with abstract concepts.
