What exactly is the point and/or value of this novel?
Why is it so highly praised?
Is it because it offers a reasonable scenario where the Axis win WW2?

It has some interesting ideas and begins his exploration into identity, mostly the stuff about antiques. I liked the different emphasis of society with the great works achieved by the Nazis but their lack of the consumer comforts of post war USA like tv. Also the in universe alt-history novel where the UK and USA split the world in two, it seemed like he was saying that it's simplistic to assume that if the war went the other way the world would be so completely and totally dominated by one monolithic culture instead of more complex scenario like we have in real life. The apologetics for the japanese is bizarre bordering on fetishistic and tarnishes the book a bit.

I love dick and its clear this book is popular because of the subject matter because it doesn't really stand up to his later works.

yea this is his black sheep, the interesting thing about it is that Dick wrote it using the I Ching, for every turn of the plot.

because the scariest part of if the Nazis won and Japan and Germany took over is that life INEVITABLY goes on, and (a topic that scares politifags), people would still be happy and fall asleep at night peacefully even if all jews and gays and coloreds were wiped off the face of the earth some 60 years ago.

Was gonna sage but really digging the image dump.

The fact that he won a Hugo for Man In the High Castle feels more like a concession because of the fact that his much better work was snubbed. Stuff like Clans of the Alphane Moon, A Maze of Death and Scanner Darkly wasn't even nominated.

>What exactly is the point and/or value of this novel?

It has to do with the political climate of today's time and because people love to see the ""liberals"" rise up agaisnt racism and some oppressive society.
>Is it because it offers a reasonable scenario where the Axis win WW2?
Fucking lol, the lore as so many "ifs" that is almost as artificial as some lord of the rings fantasy setting.
There is literally no way a country as small as germany alone can control and enslave half of the world population without falling apart in less than 1 year. The setting is completly unrealistic and impossible to ever been achived in reality , even if germany achived total victory, every leader knows there is a limit on about the amount of territory you can control over without chaos to be installed, no matter how big your army is.
Its not even close to Dick's best works, the people that praise this probably dont know much about history and the goals of hitler and the german command had in mind during that time, and stay in for the fads of comparing the current political climate to a fascist totalitarian regime.
Its just a flavour of the month book/series, it will be over soon.

>Is it because it offers a reasonable scenario where the Axis win WW2?

But it doesn't. Robert Harris and Harry Turtledove have written far more plausible alternative histories involving Germany winning WWII.

Well it won a Hugo in the 60's so it's not exactly flavour of the month. Just because Netflix has taken their turn at graverobbing Dick for a few ideas to distort doesn't mean people didn't like it before.

You may be right, but you have to admit it has only gotten more attention now because the series got an good score on IMDb.
The plebians will eat everything IMDb tells them to like, no matter what, vast majority of my friends that havent read a fucking book in their entire lifes are praising this series and try to act as if they know how much about WW2 history despite being all factually wrong and impossible to happen.
I find it ironic how the series is about misinformation, manipulation and and the spreading of "lies" fascism did, when the actual ideas they try to convey to the public about the german nazi regime are completly wrong. Im not trying to defend hitler or trying to say some "nazis were the good guys" whalabala bullshit, but the interpretation and whole fundation of ideas on the series are pure BS. Its just fads of the current political climate that the media tries to convey.

no offense, but the reason people like this book/series is not because of actual history, it's because the aesthetics are fun. People love New York covered in swastikas, 50s-style Nazis, Hoover being "up to nasty criminal shit" while A LITERAL NAZI, the way the jap troops bow to each other instead of saluting, etc. No one watches this for the story.

Since when do you speak for everyone that watches the series? I have 6 friends that are watching this mainly because of the plot and the "historical" and "realistic depiction" the story tries to have on the topic.

>People love New York covered in swastikas, 50s-style Nazis, Hoover being "up to nasty criminal shit" while A LITERAL NAZI, the way the jap troops bow to each other instead of saluting, etc. No one watches this for the story.
Lmao, if i wanted to see that kind of shit i would actually go watch any 50s and 60s era ww2 movies and still laugh my ass off at how silly they are. In my opinion i dont really get the appeal of that "easthetic", it really isnt nothing that special and it came into existence from the overdramafications movies did of the nazis. Mixing the "serious plot" with the overdramafication and swastikas sticking out of every hole in the city leaves for me no porpuse to watch this piece of shit.

>> No.12330495

>>12330459
honestly I think they are watching it for the aesthetics as well. You are right, it's overdramatized, but that's the point. People have a visceral reaction to Nazis and their depiction. Just seeing a world going on ruled by Nazis is inherently subversive to them, no matter how the Nazis are portrayed. People don't care about the exactness of how the Nazis won WWII, and watching an althist movie/reading an althist book getting there is not as exciting except to wehraboos and milifags in general, what is so subversive and aesthetically appealing is that the show is about a world after and under Nazi victory, and that it is fundamentally normal
