Nietzsche wasn't actually as depressive and morose as he comes up in his books. He had a wide circle of friends and he loved lighthearted literature like Mark Twain. He also had a biting sense of humor and even in his books he cracks jokes all the time. It was only later , a little before his breakdown that he became somewhat bipolar-manic depressive.
