Hate to use the word “deconstruction” but it takes place in a private school overruled by a student council, which is a typical archetype in anime but it gets combined with themes from fairy tales and classic literature. The first season is like a setup to the overarching plot of the show and introduces the characters. As it continues there is a feeling that “things aren’t like they seem” and the motives of the students, like why they choose to participate in the duels, are explored in detail.

There is also a lot of strange humor in the show, which reminded me a lot of the jokes in Twin Peaks after I watched the latter. If you like David Lynch or Herman Hesse the series is absolutely worth trying

Yeah. A lot of people dislike the second season because it’s incredibly repetitive, but the last third of the show and its finale are really good. For the second season I would recommend the episodes that focus on the main characters (Nanami, Saionji & Wakaba, Juri) or to just watch the final duel between Mikage and Utena because the song lyrics of their fight explain that he’s the ghost of a dead teacher being manipulated by the main villain, and that the school is in its own closed off existence.

Sot Weed factor is such a gem
>real depth to the characters
>rape is never not funny
>amazing mix of high brow and low brow
>the subplot IS the main plot somehow
>also the novel ends incredibly well.

Stick with it, it may seem large but honestly I wish it were longer.

*shrug* Read Eben's actual poem the sot weed factor(main char was a real human bean & a poet). I think barth does a great job capturing the time and the season, and I think it's more comfy than picturesque.

A corrupted mind sees through a tarnished lens.
I read Moby Dick and it had zero eroticism, let alone homoeroticism. You are just a sodomite, that corrupts and defiles everything you see, touch, or do.

Planning to read this soon, how good is compared to Confessions of a Mask? I never see it mentioned, but I picked it up ages ago as it was the only one of his they had in the store.

honestly Ishmael is probably one of the most influential books I've read for my personal development, since I read it as a young teen and it set me off on a very specific tangent

Pretty good. If it means anything to you, it's my favourite of his novels. Like Confessions, it's clearly very semi-autobiographical. Almost a spiritual successor.

at some point people came to the conclusion that because a book is for children its ok if its utter shit. in the past people took great effort to write quality children lit.

Because "Young Adult" books are a new thing. Before, teenagers just read "adult" books.
So children's classics exist, but not YA classics as it's a new category.

at first, I thought; OK cool, I enjoy boats, talking dogs, the time period and the cozy setting, wait why are we on this fricking island for so long? I need to pick it back up.

Tried reading GR at least 3 or 4 times due to the memes and some of the language is truly beautiful, but boy is it weird. And don't get me long I do love me some weird, I think this last time I stopped at either the dodo bird hunting tirade or when he goes all gay nazi bondage chapter.

maybe Ill have more luck with against the day.
