I know this post will get a lot of replies saying “haha bro not me, you’re just a retard”, but I actually used to do this. When I was 15 and read Blood Meridian and Moby Dick, among others, I memorized the words I didn’t know from those books and used them in normal conversation all the time. I would say harangued instead of harassed or say dragooned instead of coerced. People would laugh at me behind my back. I think it’s also a reason my gf at the time left me.
I remember one one calling a grassland a chaparral and a dried up creek an arroyo and getting laughed at to my face by my gf. It was more of a soft giggle but I knew why she was laughing

Lol i do this all the time. If you're openly self-aware people laugh with rather than at you. Either way there's nothing wrong with making people laugh. It's better to laugh than be indifferent all the time. The sound of women and children laughing is one of the few simple things I have left to enjoy in this world, even if it's at my own expense.

The only time I read something in my native language nowadays is for university and thus mostly texts written in academic jargon ridden with a lot of big words. This vastly colors off on the way I speak and makes me use fancy synonyms instead of the normal and easy alternative because it's just more salient to me. I really hate this. I feel much more comfortable and natural speaking and writing in English at this point where my vocabulary is much more limited.

That's not even a proper use of salient, and is as such as salient example of the manner in which you presumably regularly publicly embarrass yourself.

No, my German is flawless, it's not about embarrassing myself, rather about not sounding like a normal human being. Why is salient used wrongly here, though? I thought it means that something is more easily accessible to your consciousness than other things.

Except that readability (being understood) is way more important to success than having a wide vocabulary.

Speaking at a 5th grade level is part of what got Donald Trump elected. It's why Stephen King and J.K. Rowling are successful. It's why accessible plain English writing is an important trend in governments across the world.

You are a pleb if you think having a big brain vocabulary makes you elite. Pretending you have status is not the same as actually influencing others.

Then, of course, there are people who refuse to understand or intentionally strawman.

I clearly said that it's about influencing others, and being successful. Popularity is just one possible result. It doesn't matter where you apply it- communicating clearly and simply makes you more influential. It helps you achieve your goals.

This guy >>12304723 is dumb. Using complicated vocabulary and jargon is only coincidentally a signal of status. Complex and unusual language is sometimes needed to describe things, and becomes associated with professional and academic expertise.

But it is actually stupid to use complex vocabulary when simpler vocabulary works just fine. One reason people do it is to increase the exclusivity of their club and pretend they have higher status by simply creating a barrier to entry - an etiquette and language community - that group members know and outsiders don't. This is what English academics do. They are the last people on earth who should be using impenetrable language.
