I hate that book and I think he was a god. I do quite like the description of Lenehan at the beginning of Two Gallants though. It’s charming and pitiful.

why do you hate this book?
Is it because he doesn't display his godliness as you would like? That might make you a pseud.
I am personally glad he restrained himself on this one, each story is deep

The stories are about as shallow as they get. And no, I enjoy his poetry a fair amount which is far from his later work when he reaches divinty.

They're simple and powerful.
Don't be an elitist over silly shit.
But you are a poetryfag, so...

The punchline at the end of After The Race was hilarious.

I didn't think The Dead was as good as people say it is desu, the last few pages (from when he leaves the house onwards) was stellar but the party scene wasn't great. Although the poem was good.

The Dead tier:
The Dead

Top tier:
Two Gallants
Araby
A Little Cloud
A Painful Case

Also decent:
Ivy Day...
Grace

I actually agree.
I think most people don't even really get it.
It's about a really bitter man (formerly virgin) who dwells on how shitty and formal people are, who then goes home and fantasizes about how he was cucked, to be honest.

The party part is merely good to very good, the end (and the contrast with the earlier parts) is what makes it god tier. I'm not sure anyone really disagress though.

Two Gallants is my favorite

The sisters taking care of the priests are the only one doing real work in the house. Like in that Chekov short story were a woman devoutly takes care of her professor brother all her life, only to realize in old age that her brother always was a senile pseud that didn't contribute anything to science and that her devotion was wasted.

A Little Cloud is my favorite, then Boarding House and The Dead

The guy goes to a yacht party, gambles away all his money by being bad at poker, feels depressed but his situation is made slightly less bitter by the thought of going home to bed. The last line of the story is the guy getting up to leave but someone else opens the curtains and says "good morning, lads" (or something similar). The joke is that the guy gets his hope of going to bed crushed. It's pretty straightforward, I thought.
