12268540 No.12268540 [Reply] [Original]

>never did a single thing to help another person, only focused on his own self-centered artistic ambitions and writing his diary
>wrote and complained about his father, a strict but fair disciplinarian, a much better father than many others, ruining his name for the rest of time by having works published crying about him
>told his friend Mac Brod not to publish his works, knowing that he would publish them anyways, solely as a publicity stunt in order to increase his own mystique as a “mysterious genius writer”
>worked an easy part time job from 8:30-2:30, but still complained about not having time to write and “the horrors of bureacracy”
>had a horrible sleep schedule, taking a long nap after work and sleeping at 3am virtually every day
>jacked off to bestiality and hedgehog porn
>blamed all of his unhappiness on “the horrors of modern existence” and “the fundamental guilt of humanity”

Why do we take this loser seriously again?

James Hawes, a Kafka biographer, claimed in his book Excavating Kafka that the writer had an extensive collection of varied erotica and hardcore images. Despite the outrage of German academics who maintain that Kafka’s collection was merely art and illustration, Hawes states that Kafka kept his collection in a safe hidden in a bookshelf therefore must have known it was not for regular reading pleasure.

The illustrations include some macabre images of beastiality, gore, and lesbianism. Spiked hedgehog-esque creatures performing fellatio, naked breasts being clawed at by golems…

OP, I appreciate your original thinking here. Not merely bandwagoning onto esteemed artists of past. Your points are well-put. It makes me sad knowing Kafka may not have been a kind person, since I considered him to be a sensitive soul. I don't know, OP. But perhaps he wasn't that great a person. The animal-stuff is especially disturbing. Good thread. That said, his work can still be appreciated, even if not his person.

Funnily enough, it also gives hope to anons here that they may become great artists even in spite of their "degenerate" fetishes.

Peasant teenagers on /lit/ hardly have an appreciation of literary classics, it’s quite grating and saddening. Kafka is so appreciated because of the way he skillfully writes surrealistic stories. He’s unique amongst surrealist writers because of his realist’s penchant for details and descriptions, giving an uncanny effect by rationally, lucidly, and thoroughly describing characters living in bizarre worlds and responding to strange situations. He also deftly mixes a unique brand of comedy into these (often) nightmarish, oppressive scenarios. Just in terms of his impact on modern culture, aesthetics, and thought, he deserves to be recognized as a genius for deeply tapping into the modern-day archetype of the irrational, inhuman, frightening bureaucracy in the unique way leading to the famous word “Kafkaesque”.

For the small band of devoted occultists, mystics, and magicians here, too, it’s a wonderful fun fact that Kafka confessed to the mystic Rudolf Steiner that he occasionally had clairvoyant episodes, and wrote in his diary that he had “bouts of clairvoyance”. It’s interesting to consider, in the light of this, the ways Kafka’s works were supposedly prescient of the upcoming Nazi state in Germany and of the Holocaust (which he died shortly before the onset of, and which his sisters were killed in). Google “Kafka clairvoyance,” unless you’re a stupid peasant or a retard Christian who doesn’t want to believe in that stuff. Spooky!

I actually don’t like Kafka VERY much, I just hate the people who shallowly criticize him when they will never write anything as archetypal, iconic, and haunting as his greatest works or greatest moments in these works, or even anything as absurdly/darkly amusing.

Kafka’s writing that borders on political and human, mundane and fantastical ambitious but restrained, shows a final rebel. A rebellion against logic and reality. My post wasn’t the most excellent and in-depth, it was just meant to give an overview some reasons Kafka is regarded as so impressive and admired by literary critics. While I admit my post didn’t give the best explanation of why Kafka is a good writer, and I was actually dissatisfied with it after writing it but still posted it anyway, I at least made some effort in writing it. You, on the other hand, have made no effort at all besides shallowly criticizing my post. Therefore, you are a retarded and useless douchebag and I happily anticipate your upcoming death so that such a useless nonentity as yourself can stop the burdening the planet with your smug and unhelpful criticisms.

To slightly add more to my post, I would also say that the way he makes multivalent allegories/ symbolism is also quite impressive. He manages to fuse in single stories, plots, situations, ideas etc existential/religious, psychological, and political ideas. For instance, his constant motif of characters facing strange, looming, sometimes terrifying, and incomprehensible large bureaucracies (the court in The Trial, the castle in The Castle) simultaneously can be used to examine the relationship between a person and a state/bureaucracy, a child and their parent(s) (or father, as the famous psychoanalytic interpretation of Kafka would go), the person before God/the angelic hierarchy, or just the plight of the modern existentialist before the apparent arbitrariness of the world and elusive nature of meaning, being unable to understand destiny, etc. To have so many possible and interesting meanings equally contained in a story is a pretty respectable feat. This isn’t to suggest his greatest stories are mere allegories — in containing so many different possible meanings, they go beyond just being allegories, to creating images/archetypes/symbols which are compelling in and of themselves without necessarily having to represent something else. I think his most evocative creation in this respect is the concept of the castle, the mysterious people who work at the castle whom the land-surveyor K. can never quite fully get in touch with or understand or win over.

I’m just riffing here. Not meant to be the deepest literary interpretation.
