It's a short, semi-autobiographical novel and the last work Dazai completed before his suicide. It is presented a series of biographical notebooks written by the protagonist, Yozo, who, beginning with his childhood, details the struggles caused by his alienation from human beings, including: being molested as a child, his creation of a fake clownish persona to deceive people into viewing him as normal, his attempted suicides, alcoholism, etc. I won't spoil too much of it but it is the only full portrait of alienation which I have read; i.e. it is not a false creation intended to portray the error of the protagonist or a presentation of a solution with a happy ending.
