Is Hemingway right or just coping?

>> No.12190389

>>12190382
He's coping. There's no way Hemingway could have written like Tolstoy.

What do you think he means, “make the book seem larger, wiser, and all the rest of it... that’s what I always skipped in Tolstoi...”

What is he talking about there? How does Tolstoy “write like God...”

I don’t think Hemingway is as good as Tolstoy but I like him a lot and I see similarities between For Whom the Bell Tolls and War and Peace.

I have to agree with the amerilard author for once. Russians have an unnecessarily bloated and self indulgent writing style and deserve to get ignored for that.

>> No.12190445

Did he literally just mean write from a third person perspective?

Hemingway is great dude, a bit arrogant but so was Tolstoy. Try reading some books sometimes.

I consider reading cover to cover.

More specifically: perfect omniscience. Hemingway wrote in third person all the time.

'Why did he kill himself, Daddy?'

'I don't know, Nick. He couldn't stand things, I guess.'

'Do many men kill themselves, Daddy?'

'Not very many, Nick.'

'Do many women?'

'Hardly ever.'

'Don't they ever?'

'Oh, yes. They do sometimes.'

'Daddy?'

'Yes.'

'Where did Uncle George go?'

'He'll turn up all right.'

'Is dying hard, Daddy?'

'No, I think it's pretty easy, Nick. It all depends.'

They were seated in the boat, Nick in the stern, his father rowing. The sun was coming up over the hills. A bass jumped, making a circle in the water. Nick trailed his hand in the water. It felt warm in the sharp chill of the morning.

In the early morning on the lake sitting in the stern of the boat with his father rowing, he felt quite sure that he would never die.

based. I can hear the oars knocking in the locks. feel the moist air. the bluntness of the private conversation, out on the water and out of earshot. there's a lot unsaid here. hemingway haters are pseuds with no ability to actually read literature. they just gloss over it like robots.
