This is true. I always think of Tolkien, who served at the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles in human history.
Imagine if he had died, there would be no Lord of the Rings, and no modern fantasy genre as we know it.

Everyone gave them multiple chances to stop and turn around. People were willing to tolerate the intolerable just to avoid war... the idea of Britain as warmongering and looking to do war with Germany flies in the face of the popularity of appeasement in UK politics and all their soft gloved dealing with Germany in the Munich negotiations after the annexation of Czechoslovakia and so on. Even after the war was declared Britain and France didnt really do anything for about a year, it took Germany invading France to begin it proper.
