Agreed. If I could save one silent film from being lost I would choose F. W. Murnau's The Head of Janus. It's an unauthorized adaptation of Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It had an all star crew, starred Conrad Veidt, and featured a young Bela Lugosi. It's a crying shame this work of pure horror kino is lost forever.

I guess you have limited the search to a single subforum, as Rutracker has always had the DVDs. Search for "aлeкceй гepмaн 1971 | 1976 | 1984 | 1998 | 2013" from the main page. Single DVD torrents (exclude the lower quality 4 DVD collection from 2005) are the best option available, as every film before his last only had an SD transfer. Judging from less than substantial financial situation of Lenfilm, German's home studio, in all post-Soviet decades, we won't see them in better digital form until some western publisher pays for a new transfer.

It would be easy to differentiate between his Soviet films, based on his father's works, and works of his father's generation, and two modern ones in which creative duet of Alexey German and Svetlana Karmalita was not limited by anything (except lack of funding, lack of production capacities, lack of actors who act non-professionally enough, etc., etc.), by treating the former as “the good fruits of Soviet Cinema”, and the latter as “art-house experiments”. In fact, public usually does just that. However, what German did was always a vibrant recreation of certain time, or, more properly, a person's recollection of that time, something more true than even a documentary.

“Trial on the Road” tells a story of a Nazi collaborator giving himself in to guerilla force to fight for his country once again. Mind that official Soviet stance during the war was that anyone captured alive had already been a defector, and the film was made in the reactionary era when art industry had been producing bureaucratically permissible concrete-cast soc-realist tales about war heroes like pancakes. Director and other members of the production team were fired or reprimanded, and the movie would only be released in 1985.

“Twenty Days Without War”, another wartime story of frontline journalist and writer leaving to struggling hinterland (IMDB annotation, “it's very far from the front but the war seems to be present in people's minds even there”, might be one of the dumbest.), was based on the work of Konstantin Simonov, a renowned Soviet writer and press correspondent, and was only made possible by Simonov using his status to beat his way through authorities to let German film it. German's tendency of choosing “unsuitable” or little known actors was one of the sources of contention, as the main role was played by Yuri Nikulin, a comedy star and a clown loved by the whole Soviet Union (who also served the whole war, and then some, in artillery), whom higher-ups found unfitting to the role. At meetings, Simonov reportedly shouted that it was his own character, and that he knew better than them. Still, in the end, the director and other members of the production team were fired or reprimanded, and another year of bureaucratic fights was needed to put the finished movie on screens.

“My Friend Ivan Lapshin” follows people who fought for the new future during Russian Revolution and Civil War, and are now making their country great during peaceful times of the 1930s, in the last moments before Stalin purges turn them into fiends and/or victims. The director and other members of the production team were fired or reprimanded for their un-heroic and bleak portrayal of Soviet life, and it was demanded that movie had to be remade, with added colour, etc. When German's wrestle with authorities was ongoing, Perestroyka came, and then his movies turned to be OK.

>> No.12046802

>>12046796
“Khrustalyov, My Car!” is a semi-autobiography of author's childhood (that turned to be exactly how many of his contemporaries remembered their own, up to and including lack of colour), if his father was a high-ranking Soviet doctor going through peak post-war Stalinism that made life in the whole country oppressive in itself. Even though it has countless details that could only be fully understood by late couple that created that world, or, sometimes, remembered by those who lived at that time, the film is not impenetrable to whose not unfamiliar with good old dystopia. Made in seven years, on and off, with piecemeal funding from local and foreign sources, it attracted zero interest in Cannes, where presumable connoisseurs left in the middle of the screening; that hurt just as much as Soviet hassle.

Finally, “Hard to Be a God” is just a story about “your bud” (German's own words) living on a planet that is only slightly different from ours. It was also supposed to be his first movie as an independent director back in the days, but, after the work on screenplay and planning had been started with Strugatsky brothers, 1968 happened, and left no chance to put the story that had so many hints and implications on screen. German told that meeting his future wife while on vacation at sea the same year was a honest exchange with fate, though.

There is a number of long and interesting interviews with German, and a number of critical texts about his works in Russian, but most of those aren't translated. You can only hope to find something that crept into professional texts because authors were genuinely interested.

god I fucking love these threads

I'm gonna give a shit load of reccs here so put em in your IMDB to-watch list (and if you don't have one, make one!)

you guys will probably think its lame but I really enjoy Sans Soleil

along that line, Baraka and Koyaanisqatsi are really good

in a different way, Harmony Korine as a director is extremely under appreciated - I really enjoyed Julien Donkey-Boy as well as Trash Humpers. Some people will tell you its all fucking nonsense, but I think the folks here who like surreal novels like Ulysses would get what these movies are about

THX 1138, George Lucas's first movie - you need to watch it

David Lynch's Inland Empire is majorly underappreciated

you should also make sure to have seen the movie Enter the Void (and if you like it, check out Gaspar Noe's other movies)

you should also watch (imho, this whole post)(also these movies have quite a different feel from what I have so far recommended, as well as each other) Le Offret, Pixote, Pink Flamingos, Liquid Sky, Out of the Blue, Stalker, Children of Men

People think I'm crazy when I mention these films having no real narrative but still say I love them. In college people called me pretentious and joked that I was going to watch another 90 minute music video, but then I put on those films for them and they were convinced that they were great. Fucking gorgeous films that I could just watch frequently.

Enter The Void is fine, much preferred Irreversible. Dying to see Climax, I hear that's his best film so far. Love looks like shit.

Pink Flamingos, Le Offret, Stalker and Childre of Men are nice choices, anon. Been meaning to watch Sans Soleil after watching La Jetee, need to pick up that DVD that bundles both films together.

How many of you lads seen Peter Watkins' The War Game? It's basically Threads but filmed twenty years before, depicting the devastation of what would happen if nuclear war hit Britain. I think Threads is a lot more disturbing and shocking by today's standards, but The War Game feels like a late night news broadcast to such an extent that it's literally the only fictional film to win the Oscar for Best Documentary.

I've seen it and didn't like it. I understand the message to be more careful where you buy your meat from and to be aware of the cruelty to animals, but I felt the film was so immensely one-sided. Sure, show me the shock and devastation done to animals, but allow me to also see how we've improved over the past few decades and what it is I can specifically do to help improve situations too. I actually thought Leonardo DiCaprio's environmental film Before The Flood did this evaluation rather well - it talked a lot about the doom and gloom of climate change but then elaborated on what people can do to help and change things. When you hit viewers with the pessimism, many people just tune out and attempt to ignore it since it ruins their day, but if you bookend it with some optimism and how to improve the situation, more people are likely to take action.

I saw Earthlings and a lot of what it showed was upsetting, so I would admit it's very effective in that way, but I didn't feel it was too informative and I found it too manipulative.

good points. I suppose Earthlings was instrumental in motivating my research into those issues on my own and what I could do, but I can understand how it's almost traumatizing and therefore people want to push the feelings away that it creates, or ignore the project altogether. But for me personally, looking at stuff like that (which is part of our reality) is important, and feeling the pain - not stopping there of course, but I think you have to feel it full circle before you can understand the importance of doing something about it - and figuring out what to do about it, and how. I've watched other movies that don't really show how truly gruesome shit is and they really didn't rouse me to change my habits very much at all

Fair point, anon. I do admire the film for going as far as it does to show the cruelty to animals, and I really do hope that other viewers who saw it felt the urge to try and make a change too. I still feel the film should have had some optimistic bookending to indicate to the casual, passive viewers what can be done to help too but I guess if the film does leave viewers with a positive influence in the end then it's clearly more effective than I've given it credit for.

I've never seen such a symbolically rich film shot in a perfect location. As someone from a troubled past, I found the end atonement scenes incredibly cathartic, so is probably why I resonate with the film.

btw the aged protege in the last season is also the director and writer of the film. I personally thought he did a terrific job overall

Been to the cinema last week. Honestly think how Noe approached his idea of a "dance horror" is pure genius, soundtrack and cinematography is as amazing as ever.
I also got a cool poster for free with some Noé's comments from the other side. 10/10.
