Because it makes everything look so simple and beautiful while being presented in a seemingly effortless manner. It has a healing effect, you read 2 chapters and you could hold them for the rest of the day. Nothing has had the same effect on me.

Easter Eve
Enemies

A trivial thing
>She had by now recognized the prince, and did not take her eyes off his figure. It is hard to describe the delight and the suffering with which her ugly face was radiant! Her eyes were smiling and shining, her lips were quivering and laughing, while her face craned closer to the panes.

it's the best book you will ever read. the main character pierre, you will notice you can relate with him a lot. most people can. a maximalist view of the world. very naive in the beginning. but as he matures, he starts to understand reality. this is what you will get out of this book. this is not spoiler, but what i thought of the book when i read it. there are other characters that you will like. it is a book for everyone in my opinion.

I started reading it yesterday because Norm Macdonald often brings it up. It's usually not the kind of book i'm into but i've been liking it so far, i have the Constance Garnett translation. It's quite a commitment as it's the biggest book i've attempted to read.

I was told Garnett was good for Tolstoy for personal use, and that the complaints about it being too poetic were over blown.

And that P&V is best for academic use and can be overly literal.

Maude worked with Tolstoy, so don't most people defer to her work?
