Why is it so fucking long? Is it really worth it?

>> No.11940355

Yes. You can skip around some and still get the idea.

>> No.11940365

uhhh haven't you read Mortimer Adler's "How to read"? you aren't supposed to read the whole thing, dummy. read a little of the introduction, read a little in the midway, then read the last chapters, there's no need to read all the words lol

>> No.11940428

Because it's actually two books. Part 2 was written in response to other authors writing fanfiction.

I just checked it's like 1000+ in my Spanish edition. I wonder what happens in this

It's a big book with lotsa little books in it, 'cause that's how they used to do things in those days.

Oh yeah, it's a hoot and a half.

Dozens of adventures where Don Quijote sees something and perceives it incorrectly while Sancho sees this and either tries to correct DQ or just goes along with it.

>> No.11942336

I read the whole thing and I thought it was worth it; if not for entertainment then just to say you're one of the few who've read the whole thing.

Third person chimin' in, Sancho also frequently gets injured because of DQ's shenanigans but sticks with him because of greed, for DQ promises wealth in the shape of land and cattle. Or whatever.

They didn't have TV.

Only if you're not an NPC. Cervantes wrote some of the most insightful and hilarious critiques of NPC culture of all time.

You just described a basic weekly sitcom.

Actually that'd make for a pretty fun sitcom.

By book 2, Sancho is in it for the adventure.

>>11940428 Ah ,yes "El Quijote de Avellaneda".
Cervantes was so pissed at people actually thinking that was the official sequel, he decided to write the damn thing just to stop the bastard.

Nowaday's he'd just sue him.

A glorious example of how copyright law has screwed things up.

Five centuries old, and the comedy in it is still gold.

May I add, a sentence which summons it all (and it's my own translation, so please forgive my clumsiness)

"...as there's such a madness, as to being so unmad, just trying to figure this World as it is, and not as it should shall may be"

...and now, take this Path. If your soul allows you.

Slice of life sitcom with a very long episode list vs short movie. Good comedy on both sides, the only downside is getting used to outdated language on the first pages + translations.
Also, is pic related the raunchy prequel?

i think is always worth to read classics if you want to. Classics can help you to have a bigger view of literature in general. You can read the classics for a bunch of reasons, or just don't read it.
it's a important book

Cátedra is one of the few publishers for which pocket sized really means pocket sized.

I've put them in coat pockets without problems.
