What he couldn't see was that while imitations really are just imitations of "our universe's" truth, they're perfectly true imitations of a potential universe's truth

In less autistic terms: you may not be able to draw an apple realer than a real apple, nor draw an apple that's a perfect imitation of a real apple, but your drawing still is a perfect imitation of a different apple. Same for concepts in poetry and shit.
