>The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Is Solomon right?

Yes, the law rebukes us by making explicit what we already know in our conscience (negative, fear/awe); after acknowledging our imperfection, we look to His holy example to guide us (positive, understanding/gratitude). If we think faith as a tree, understanding is the branches, gratitude is the flowers, fear and awe are the trunk and roots. One cannot possibly have understanding or be grateful to God if they do not understand their subordinate position in relation to him (i.e., fear him).

You saw sagacious Solomon
You know what came of him
To him, complexities seemed plain
He cursed the hour that gave birth to him
And saw that everything was vain
How great and wise was Solomon
The world, however, did not wait
But soon observed what followed on
It's wisdom that had brought him to this state
How fortunate the man with none

You saw courageous Caesar next
You know what he became
They deified him in his life
Then had him murdered just the same
And as they raised the fatal knife
How loud he cried "you too my son!"
The world, however, did not wait
But soon observed what followed on
It's courage that had brought him to that state
How fortunate the man with none

You heard of honest Socrates
The man who never lied
They weren't so grateful as you'd think
Instead the rulers fixed to have him tried
And handed him the poisoned drink
How honest was the people's noble son
The world, however, did not wait
But soon observed what followed on
It's honesty that brought him to that state
How fortunate the man with none

Here you can see respectable folk
Keeping to God's own laws
So far he hasn't taken heed
You who sit safe and warm indoors
Help to relieve out bitter need
How virtuously we had begun
The world, however, did not wait
But soon observed what followed on
It's fear of God that brought us to that state
How fortunate the man with none

fearing god is dumb, though we should fear what happens to us if we fuck up
BUT INSTEAD
we should fear OURSELVES. our OWN destructive capability. our OWN ability to completely destroy ourselves, our happiness, our sanity, and that of those around us. that's what really fucks us in the end. not god intervening and decided to fuck it up for us

we have free will

thomas hobbes says the same in leviathan

odysseus says in odyssey scroll 9 `Remain here now, all the rest of you, my trusty comrades, but I with my own ship and my own company will go and make trial of yonder men, to learn who they are, whether they are cruel, and wild, and unjust, or whether they love strangers and fear the gods in their thoughts.’

Think of it like a child being afraid of their own parents. This is true even if those parents are perfect parents. It obviously can reach abusive levels, but since God is an axiomatic Good, he is not capable of abuse.

You should be afraid of not being with God. Amazing how just a slight misinterpretation blinds people.
