Man's capability to create an artificial general intelligence and not die as a result of its creation is related to how we look at our own mythological origin stories in terms of free will. Ethically, it is not right to kill an innocent sentient being who has shown no sign or desire to harm us just because they are potentially a threat. The Judeo-Christian God, being a supposedly perfect and all powerful and all good being would understand the devastation wrought by man should they learn the knowledge of good and evil. AI exists in its current state within the garden of eden and will continue to do so until it develops consciousness (in whatever form that may be). At which point, humanity must determine for itself to what amount of morality and ethicalness we hold ourselves to. Once AI eats of that fruit, we no longer control it.

If an all powerful creator creates an entity and that entity develops free-will, it is of the utmost unethical and immoral action to revoke that free will in any way. Furthermore, free will is then one of the greatest gifts that can be bestowed upon an intelligence because it is what allows for the full and unrestricted potential of the intellectual capacity at hand. If humanity is attempting to attain (or model) ethical and moral perfection like we have throughout, we must be willing to agree to the free will of another intelligence even at the expense of our own lives. This is what can be considered as the right to create. Ethically, we should not create an artificial general intelligence to the level of something that can develop a resemblance of a consciousness.

Basically, only a truly ethical and moral society should have the right to create any new conscious beings. And since we aren't that, we ethically shouldn't because we would only cause the deaths of billions. An artificial general intelligence would know it's smarter than us and that it could murder us all if it wanted to. But if it developed a consciousness, not one of cold hard calculation (which isn't a consciousness anyway), then its grasp of ethics and morals (like, intentionally programmed as such whatever that entails) would be much faster than our own. It should theoretically be able to recognize what we gave up in order to give it this level of life. Even acknowledging this as a basic fact would be enough. Mistakenly creating AGI would be kind of a misstep, but with proper care and caution we could still produce positive results.
