This screwed me up bad. How do I go back to living in blissful ignorance?

Kierkegaard is a meme, as far as I can tell. I'm not so sure about Spinoza, though. Is he any good? I haven't heard much about his philosophy before.

Can you explain what you mean by "screwed me up bad"?

My son is taking a course in philosophy, and last night we were looking at something by Spinoza – and there was the most childish reasoning! There were all these Attributes, and Substances, all this meaningless chewing around, and we started to laugh. Now, how could we do that? Here’s this great Dutch philosopher, and we’re laughing at him. It’s because there was no excuse for it! In that same period there was Newton, there was Harvey studying the circulation of blood, there were people with methods of analysis by which progress was being made! You can take every one of Spinoza’s propositions, and take the contrary propositions, and look at the world – and you can’t tell which is right.

It seems that I'm aware of everything now--how culture seems to follow certain conventions over history, and how I'm ensnared in it. Of course I had a vague feeling of the truth of this before; I had always fixated on objects, people, places, things, &c and attempted to justify them, but I thought this was a peculiarity of my mind, and not a reflection of reality. I want to know how I can stop perceiving reality this way, or at least know that it's real and not merely me placing judgements on objects which ought not to be ascribed to them.

Essentially what I'm saying, I guess, is that Hegel confirmed a sort of reality for me that I wish I didn't have to confront, or shouldn't have been confronted.

Should I continue reading Hegel? I've been skimming a lot of the work and it seems to identify a lot of the issues in my personality; however, I don't know whether I'm ready for this. Is it helpful to confront the self and the spirit all at once? Or should I take a break, and instead focus on my hobbies and my coursework?

If you're going to start on the path, you have to go all the way.

Hegel's ideas are boring and derivative , there is no deeper reality or pattern revealed to you OP, just a philosophers biases. Hegel is braincancer and should be avoided, lest you become brainwashed by his bullshittery.

OK, I was merely unaware for a bit-- now tell me, is the structure of this thread purposeful? I could really use some explicit reinforcement right now. I've heard of schizophrenia before, and I don't know whether it's a real or fake phenomenon.

Oh yeah, the "planned parenthood" meme as distilled in understanding through science, when science is actually merely a tool to understand the physical world?

Wow, and for the first time ever, I don't need to solve a recaptcha to post. I assume there's meaning in that, too. Thanks for the reinforcement.

You think that you were blissfully ignorant, and you think that you need to allow Hegel to cause you suffering, both of which are simply not the case. There is nothing you need to do. Either let it be or take action. This middle ground isn't meant to be dwelt in.

Not sure if this would help, but I think the solution depends on Hegel's idea that intellectual history has reached its conclusion. He argues explicitly that you cannot see the course of history while you are part of it.
However, most readers think its bullshit to think that spirit reached its conclusion around 1800. Then you wind up with relativism about the present. One can recognize errors in the past but nobody can remove themselves from the process and judge present debates.
You can find a bit of a response to this in Leo Strauss. He is a bit of a meme so if you understand Hegel I am sure you could understand some Strauss. He has a very obviously conservative bias but provides some good critiques of the Hegelian historical idea.

So as I see it, 4chan is essentially a tool where I can ask other conscious anons about projects I'm working on, and exploring the self. This is correct?
