Hey /lit/, so I'm a bit of an uneducated dummy on most things and I want to alleviate that a bit. Has reading all sorts of literature really made you smarter and a better thinker? I feel I'll still be dumb even after reading a lot, because I think I've lost the gene lottery and just have a shit brain.

Yes but browsing this website has cost me a few IQ points so I'm pretty much where I started.

reading doesn't mean just reading books, it means being intellectually alert in all circumstances

Do you think that is a state of mind that can be trained, or simply a state that only the smarter portion of humanity possesses? Perhaps a bit of both?

I suppose I don't have anything to lose by trying, but I don't want to end up as one of those people pretending to be smart.

Maybe every individual has different intellectual potential and it's just a matter of filling that "cup" of potential, but it's hard to go beyond it.

Yeah I'll start going through the starter kit.

That's a good question. Last year I overcame vidya addiction and since then have read ~70 books and I'm not sure if I'm any smarter. I suspect the answer is yes but I can't really explain why. Certainly I have more interesting things to talk about and I no longer begin tangents with "I read this online article that said"

that's because you're reading fiction, read philosophy

Having more discussion material is a good point, I'll keep that in mind to keep me going. I fear reading so much so suddenly might turn me off at first, I guess I'll do my best to adapt.

For me it was effortless; the floodgates opened when I got my first smartphone and discovered b-ok, now I find myself reading every moment I'm not working, sleeping or socialising.
