/lit/, my only marketable skills is my ability to write, but I don't want to compromise my artistic integrity.

What sort of novels are profitable, but not a source of eternal shame for their author?

Mystery comes to mind. The rule basically seems to be that (newly written) literature needs to be realist, and set within living memory (relative to the author.) Everything else is for hobbyists.

Self-help Books. Sell a lot. Then admit that it was fiction. Dang. Two birds with one rock.

Uh, yes, you dullard?

Self-delusion is far more common than bad writing. Writers believe they can be 100% self absorbed and still reach a large audience. Well, that's impossible. Some compromise is necessary. I'm just trying to see where on the sliding scale of compromise I can tolerate being.

If you don't believe it's possible to write in different styles deliberately, it's probably because you are not a writer.

Why not start from what you're interested in? What have you written so far?
