I'm over in Western Australia. It's a beautiful country and people are friendly, but there's a real anti-intellectual culture here. I'd imagine it comes from the conviction history of the country Anyone who does something that comes across as them saying they're better than others, like studying literature, is immediately disliked by the whole country. What I see of it in Australia is very sad. The aboriginals here have lost most of their traditional ways of life and just sit around all day drinking and sniffing petrol. Their bodies are largely unable to handle the western diet too. They get addicted to sugar, lose all their teeth and develop diabetes and all kinds of other health problems. They don't want to leave their traditional lands either and sit around in communities in the middle of nowhere, days away from actual civilisation where they can find a proper education, healthcare and government services to try to break them out of the cycle of property.

It's terrible and I don't see it as a situation that will ever improve, sadly. The stolen generation, as horrible as it was, really is the only practicable way that the Government saw to fixing the problem. The idea was to completely separate them from Aboriginal culture and have them properly integrate with anglo-Australia.

I think even then, if they were closer, they'd likely to be zoned out like black people or just impoverished people generally in the US. Quality education in school districts raises home prices and pushes out the poor. If you research the best school districts, most have homes costing close to 1 million dollars. It's isolation without social mobility.
