/catholic/ general

I just found out that a church near me, which my mom referred to as 'snooty,' offers Latin Mass

I want to go but I'm kind of nervous about not knowing any of the proper responses. All my life I've attended typical modern churches where everybody wears jeans and graphic tees and worshipers kneel with their butt half-propped against the pew

Anybody have any advice on the transition?

Wear dress shirt and pants at least. Preferably a jacket. Or a tie.
Talk to the priest beforehand. Confess before receiving mass.

Most churches will have "guide to the mass" sheets at the back of the church explaining what to say. If you can't find them, just ask the priest or a parishoner where they are. I'm sure everyone will be kind.

>I want to go but I'm kind of nervous about not knowing any of the proper responses.

1. THAT SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM, SO LONG AS YOU GRADUALLY AND EVENTUALLY LEARN; NOONE SHOULD ALIENATE, NOR DENIGRATE, YOU, FOR NOT KNOWING ALL, OR ANY, OF THE RESPONSES, BECAUSE (1) NOONE CARES, AND (2) SINCE IT IS NOT A PRIVATE CLUB, OR SOCIETY, IT IS TO BE EXPECTED THAT SOME OF THE ATTENDANTS WOULD BE LESS VERSED, OR SAVVY, THAN OTHERS; DO NOT LET THE OVERCOMPLEX FORMALISM INTIMIDATE YOU; ULTIMATELY, IT IS DAILY MASS, A QUOTIDIAN EVENT.

2. DESPITE THE AFOREMENTIONED, I ADVISE AS OPTIMAL THAT YOU SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM JUDEOCHRISTIANITY, AND JOIN CHRISTIANITY INSTEAD.

JUDEOCHRISTIANITY IS A JUDAIZED CORRUPTION OF THE TRUE SPIRITUAL DOCTRINE INITIATED BY JESUS, AND DEVELOPED BY HIS DISCIPLES; JUDEOCHRISTIANITY COMPRISES ALL THE SECTS THAT ARE ERRONEOUSLY CALLED "CHRISTIAN" —VIDELICET: CATHOLICISM, ORTHODOXY, PROTESTANTISM, MORMONISM, EVANGELICALISM, ANGLICANISM, ET CETERA.

Remember, OP: the Mass is not offered for your sake. The Novus Ordo has confused a lot of people on this, but it remains true for that, as well. The Mass is not said on behalf of the laity.

The Mass is said on behalf of Jesus Christ, God and Lord, in keeping with the old tradition of worship and sacrifice of God going back to the days of David's Israel. Priests say Mass privately all the time. It's not for you. It's not done on your behalf, or mine. It's done for God. It is the offering of the Eucharist as sacrifice to God, with God himself as that sacrifice in turn. But it is done entirely for God.

The Latin Mass really emphasizes this. So, basically, you don't need to know any of the responses. This is something I learned very quickly when I started going. Nothing YOU say or do is going to affect what goes on on the altar. It's not your doing that turns the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. It's the priest, offering the sacrifice.

So you don't actually NEED to say anything. It doesn't matter. Just sit in silence, stand and kneel when everyone else does, and ponder the great mystery.

The first time I went to a TLM, the priest noticed I was new and offered me a missal with translations. Everyone was very welcoming and it was clear that nobody looks down on those who aren't used to the responses.

Attend a few times, and if you like it buy a 1962 missal. Honestly the novus ordo can't compare in the slightest imo.

Ayy, I've been going each weekend for the past few Sundays with my grandmother

Its not difficult just sit in the back (or wherever if you feel comfortable) and just sit stand and kneel when everyone else does. You can kneel however I'm sure some people kneel the way you said there too, especially the old folks.

They have guides at mine that I grab and follow along with.

Remember to only receive the Eucharist if you're in a state of grace (have gone to confession if you've committed any serious mortal sins). When you go up usually they kneel to do it. You just put your hands together like you're praying and then open your mouth and he puts the Eucharist on your tongue. Then don't say amen, just make the sign of the cross and go back to your pew.

>Many heads of gnostic schools were identified as Jewish Christians by Church Fathers, and Hebrew words and names of God were applied in some gnostic systems.[18] The cosmogonic speculations among Christian Gnostics had partial origins in Ma`aseh Bereshit and Ma`aseh Merkabah. This thesis is most notably put forward by Gershom Scholem (1897–1982) and Gilles Quispel (1916–2006). Scholem detected Jewish gnosis in the imagery of the merkavah

This is a difficult question, because what the world tells you to do is different than what the Church will tell you to do.

I would say that you should try to find some time to talk to a priest that you trust very much on the matter. Follow the guidance of your spiritual father, if you think he gives good advice.

Pick up a bilingual missal 1962 or earlier (search missale romanum, sspx uses '62 but sspv uses even earlier I think)

Don't be afraid to attend and ask for help. Just monkey see monkey do until you get it down.

It doesn't matter much during the mass whether you do it right or not as long as the priest does it right. What you need to do is NOT participate in the eucharist until you attain sanctifying grace through baptism, confession, and penance.

Anyway this isn't /lit/ and you should at least attempt to cover it up as being /lit/ related, so read the Catechism and the Missale and the Bible

sorry you're going to get spammed with larping and the 1 (one) gnostic spammer.

The truth is liturgical abuses will happen at any mass you go to. Many "snooty" Latin masses will do better at avoiding abuses since the structure is more strict and the people are autistic about stuff. Ultimately what matters most is how you engage in the mass yourself. If you can't take it seriously when you're next to someone with jeans than you probably can't take it seriously when the dude next to you is in a tie.

1. read about the mass
2. attend daily mass as often as possible
3. pray with the eucharist in adoration

The Church needs less apathy not a rejection of Vatican II council. Less apathy starts on a personal level.

Last and not least, AVOID SSPX chapels. Despite these people's good intentions and web of discourse they ARE in schism with the Catholic Church. If the Church near you is not SSPX and legit with the diocese than by all means go and try it out. My only warning would be to do so with humility. Seeking tradition to be "better" than other parishes is a dangerous form of pride that will not lead you to heaven which should be the whole point of attending mass in the first place.

God Bless

Focus on the essentials of who you are and how God sees you. If you see yourself through your sexually before you see yourself as a son of God you will never make it. That goes for straight people as well. We are all called to live chaste lives no matter what our sexually is.

Emotional and physical chastity is something we all struggle with. The priest will not see your sin as any bigger or smaller. You have the opportunity to live a grace filled life and God can make you a saint despite the natural faults we all have. We tend to think of our faults as so huge because we see them from our point of view in day to day life. It's hard to see the context of our sin or tendencies in God's unending sea of mercy I'm glad he is calling you to confession and I pray he gives you the courage to go soon!

God bless

I think the gates of hell has prevailed against the church so Christianity refutes itself since if it were true, Catholicism would also be true. Jesus said the gates of hell would not prevail against the church yet there's a pope teaching borderline heresy regarding execution and covering up for pedophiles while kneeling to the Chinese. If that's not enough the clergy is infested with a "lavender mafia." The institution is dying and it's not coming back because it's not equipped to fight Islam or progressives. We have so called Catholic positions supporting abortion and priests in public supporting LGBT initiatives.

If the gates haven't prevailed the phrase is meaningless.

A holy parish priest, a Catholic friend you look up to, a church that offers quality RCIA programs. If you live on a college campus see if you have a Newman center or if there are focus ministers on campus.

While it's certainly possible to know Jesus more through books everyone that comes into the church does so with someone leading them along. Do not worry about being a non-Catholic and approaching priests and religious. They are there to serve you too!
